Description

This brief overview of deterrence theory is relevant because deterrence continues to play a central role in criminal justice policy and practice in Alaska and elsewhere. Although some discussions of criminal law give priority to sanctions as a form of retribution for an offense, and still others place primary emphasis on the notion of criminal incapacitation, the idea of deterrence is an element in all contemporary conversations justifying criminal punishments.
