YRS Recidivism for Release Cohorts 2008, 2009, and 2010
Group: Criminal Justice Council
The following information is based on youth released from a YRS Level 5 or Level 4 facility in 2008, 2009 or 2010 calendar year. There were a total of 814 youth released with 394 released in 2008, 219 in 2009 and 201 released in 2010. This drop in releases corresponds directly with the drop in YRS admissions for the same years, and the decrease in the overall YRS population (SAC Quarterly, 2012). All youth served at least 30 days or more at either a Level 5 or Level 4 facility and were at risk at least 18 months after release. ‘At risk’ dates were calculated using the day the youth was released from a secure facility, juvenile or adult, as some youth went directly from a YRS facility to an adult facility. Information in this report contains only arrests and re-admissions to a secure facility1 within the first 18 months of release. While viewing tables throughout this document, careful attention should be given to some of the small groups that are represented. Slight changes in counts within those small groups could create significant percentage shifts. Readers may choose to focus on larger groups where conclusions might be drawn with greater confidence.
