Public Access to Mississippi Trial Courts: Report of Media and the Courts Study Committee
Group: State of Mississippi Judiciary
Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Edwin L. Pittman created the Media and the Courts Study Committee in November 2001 to study the possibility of allowing cameras in state trial courts. Chief Justice Pittman named Justice James E. Graves Jr. as chairman of the committee. Justice Graves broadened the scope of the study to include other issues in an effort to improve the relationship between the media and the judiciary. The committee determined that its three primary goals were to: 1. Study ways to enhance the relationship between the media and the courts; 2. Educate the public and improve the people’s confidence in the justice system; and 3. Suggest ways for judges to interact with the media.
