Corrections Department - Follow-up Review
Group: Legislative Finance Committee
The mission of the New Mexico Corrections Department (department) is to provide a balanced systems approach for corrections. In 2007, the Legislative Finance Committee (Committee) staff issued a report on the department’s prison planning and oversight functions, including private prisons and health programs. The report found private prisons cost more than they should due to poorly constructed contracts and lack of competitive procurement; and the state’s approach to prison planning and financing was not it in the taxpayer’s best interest. In addition, improvements were needed in oversight of department health programs. This follow-up review assessed the status of findings and implementation of recommendations made in the May 23, 2007 report: Review of Facility Planning Efforts and Oversight of Private Prisons and Health Programs. Overall, the department has implemented or partially implemented 13 of the report’s significant recommendations shown in Table 1.
