Description

The Bureau of Justice Statistics collects and disseminates data on deaths that occur in local jails, state prisons, and during the process of arrests by state and local law enforcement agencies through its Deaths in Custody Reporting Program. This program was initiated by an act of Congress (The Death in Custody Reporting Act of 2000, Public Law 106-297), which requires the collection of individual death records for these fatalities. Collection of individual death records from local jail facilities began in 2000, followed by a separate collection from state prison authorities in 2001. In 2002, BJS began collecting death records from all state juvenile correctional systems. The collection of arrest-related records began in 2003. These four data collections make up the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program. The SAC serves as the state point of contact for the collection of arrest-related deaths in South Carolina. From 2002 to 2009, the SAC collaborated with the University of South Carolina, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice to collect these data and forward them to BJS. In 2010, the South Carolina Coroner’s Association has taken over the role of data collection for this program. Summary reports for the 2006 – 2007 data collection and subsequent collection years are available below.
